Virtual network peering is the process of linking two virtual networks so they can communicate directly with each other as if they were part of the same network. This setup allows resources within each network to interact seamlessly, improving connectivity and resource sharing across separate virtual environments.

How It Works

Virtual network peering involves establishing a direct, private connection between two virtual networks, typically within the same cloud provider or data centre. When peered, the networks can route traffic between each other without traversing external networks or the public internet. This is achieved by configuring peering relationships, which usually involve setting up routing tables and security policies to permit traffic flow. The peering connection is maintained over the cloud provider’s internal network infrastructure, ensuring low latency and high bandwidth communication.

Once peered, each virtual network retains its own address space and resources, but they can communicate as if they are part of a single, unified network. It’s important to note that peering is a one-to-one relationship, meaning each peering connection is established between two networks. If multiple networks need to connect, multiple peerings are required. Additionally, network security policies can be enforced to control what traffic can pass between the peered networks.
