Latency refers to the delay that occurs before data transfer begins after an instruction is issued. In networking, it specifically measures the time it takes for a data packet to travel from its source to its destination across a network. Lower latency is essential for real-time applications, while higher latency can cause delays and lag.

How It Works

Latency is influenced by various factors including the physical distance between devices, the speed of the transmission medium, and the processing time at network nodes such as routers and switches. When data is sent over a network, it passes through multiple devices that process and forward the packets, each adding to the overall delay. Network congestion, routing paths, and the quality of the hardware also affect latency levels. Measuring latency typically involves sending a small data packet and timing how long it takes to receive a response, often expressed in milliseconds (ms).
