XMODEM is a straightforward file transfer protocol designed to send data between computers over serial connections. It is known for its simplicity and reliability, especially in environments where communication channels may be less stable.

How It Works

XMODEM operates by dividing files into small blocks of data, typically 128 bytes each. Before transmission, the sender initiates communication by sending a start signal, and each data block is sent along with a checksum or cyclic redundancy check (CRC) for error detection. The receiver verifies the integrity of each block upon receipt and sends an acknowledgment if the data is correct or requests a retransmission if errors are detected. This process continues until the entire file is successfully transferred. The protocol uses control characters to manage the start, acknowledgment, and termination of the transfer, ensuring both sender and receiver stay synchronized throughout the process.
