WAN acceleration is a set of technologies designed to enhance the speed and efficiency of data transfer across wide area networks (WANs). It aims to reduce latency, increase throughput, and optimise bandwidth usage, making remote data communication faster and more reliable.

How It Works

WAN acceleration employs a combination of techniques to optimise data transmission. Compression reduces the size of data packets before they are sent, decreasing the amount of data that needs to traverse the network. Deduplication identifies and eliminates redundant data segments, ensuring only unique data is transmitted. Additionally, protocol optimisation techniques adjust the way data is packaged and acknowledged, reducing the impact of latency and packet loss. These methods often work together within dedicated appliances or software solutions that sit at the network edges, managing data flow between local and remote sites.

Some solutions also use caching to temporarily store frequently accessed data closer to the user, reducing the need for repeated data transfers. Network protocol enhancements and TCP optimisations further improve the flow of data, helping to overcome limitations inherent in wide area networks, which typically have higher latency and lower bandwidth compared to local networks.
