Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that allows voice communication to be transmitted over the internet using Internet Protocol (IP) networks, rather than traditional telephone lines. It converts voice signals into digital data packets that can travel across data networks, making calls more flexible and often more cost-effective.

How It Works

VoIP works by digitizing voice signals through an analog-to-digital converter, then compressing these signals into data packets. These packets are transmitted over IP networks, such as the internet or private data networks, to reach the recipient. At the receiving end, the packets are reassembled and converted back into audio signals for playback. VoIP systems often use protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) or RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) to manage call setup, control, and media delivery, ensuring quality and synchronization during communication.

VoIP can be implemented through software applications on computers or smartphones, dedicated VoIP phones, or integrated within traditional PBX systems. Quality of service (QoS) mechanisms are often employed to prioritise voice traffic over other data to maintain clear audio and reduce latency or jitter during calls.
