How It Works
A VoIP gateway functions by translating voice signals from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) into digital packets that can be transmitted over IP networks, and vice versa. When a user makes a call from a traditional phone, the gateway converts the analog voice signals into data packets using protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) or H.323. Conversely, when a call arrives from an IP network destined for a traditional phone, the gateway converts the digital packets back into analog signals suitable for the PSTN. This process involves signal processing, protocol translation, and sometimes compression to optimise bandwidth usage.
Most VoIP gateways support multiple interfaces, including traditional analog lines, digital T1/E1 lines, and Ethernet connections. They often include features like call routing, security functions, and quality of service (QoS) management to ensure clear, reliable voice communication across different network types.
