Voice over New Radio (VoNR) is a technology that allows voice calls to be made over 5G networks, offering improved call quality and greater reliability compared to previous generations. It integrates voice services directly into the 5G infrastructure, enabling seamless communication alongside data services.

How It Works

VoNR operates by utilising the 5G New Radio (NR) interface, which is the radio access technology for 5G networks. It replaces traditional circuit-switched voice calls with packet-switched voice transmission, similar to Voice over IP (VoIP). The technology leverages the 5G core network to handle voice traffic, ensuring low latency and high-quality audio. Devices establish a dedicated session using the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), which manages the signalling and media exchange for voice calls. This setup allows voice and data to share the same network infrastructure, simplifying operations and reducing latency.
