Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a set of networking protocols that allows devices connected to a network to automatically discover each other and establish communication without manual configuration. It simplifies the process of adding new devices and services to a network, making connectivity more dynamic and user-friendly.

How It Works

UPnP operates on standard network protocols such as TCP/IP and HTTP, enabling devices to locate each other through multicast discovery messages. When a device joins the network, it advertises its presence and capabilities via SSDP (Simple Service Discovery Protocol). Other devices or applications can then discover these services and interact with them automatically. UPnP also includes mechanisms for devices to request port forwarding on routers, which facilitates peer-to-peer communication and remote access. The protocols are designed to be device-agnostic, allowing a wide range of hardware and software to interoperate seamlessly.
