Twisted pair cable is a type of wiring where two conductors are twisted around each other to reduce electromagnetic interference from external sources, thereby enhancing signal integrity. It is one of the most common types of cabling used in telecommunications and computer networking, especially for Ethernet connections.

How It Works

The core principle behind twisted pair cables is the twisting of two insulated copper wires together. Each pair is twisted at a specific rate, which helps to cancel out electromagnetic interference (EMI) from external sources such as electrical noise or radio signals. This twisting also reduces crosstalk between adjacent pairs within the same cable. There are two main types: unshielded twisted pair (UTP), which relies solely on twisting for noise reduction, and shielded twisted pair (STP), which adds shielding around the pairs for additional protection against interference.

Inside the cable, each conductor carries the electrical signals, and the twisting ensures that any interference affects both wires equally. When the signals reach their destination, differential signalling is used to compare the two signals, effectively cancelling out the noise and preserving the integrity of the original data.
