Tunnelling is a network technique that involves transmitting one network protocol or application data within another protocol, creating a secure or private pathway through a network. This method encapsulates the original data, allowing it to traverse networks that may not support the original protocol directly.

How It Works

In tunnelling, the original data packet is wrapped inside a new packet that uses a different protocol, often one designed for secure or reliable transmission. This process involves two main components: the encapsulating protocol, which creates the tunnel, and the encapsulated data, which is the original network protocol or application data. When the packet reaches its destination, the outer protocol header is removed, revealing the original data for delivery to its intended recipient.

This encapsulation process often requires specialized software or hardware, such as VPN clients or tunnelling protocols, to establish and maintain the tunnel. Security features like encryption may also be applied to protect the data as it travels through the tunnel, especially over public networks.
