SSL acceleration is the use of specialized hardware or devices that offload the computationally intensive processes of SSL encryption and decryption from web servers. This helps improve website performance by reducing the processing load on the server, enabling faster data transfer and response times for secure connections.

How It Works

SSL acceleration devices typically sit between the web server and the client, intercepting SSL/TLS traffic. They contain dedicated hardware components, such as cryptographic processors, designed to handle encryption and decryption tasks more efficiently than general-purpose servers. When a client initiates a secure connection, the acceleration device performs the SSL handshake, encrypts or decrypts data, and then forwards the unencrypted or encrypted data to the web server as needed. This offloading allows the web server to focus on serving web content rather than managing complex cryptographic operations.

These devices often support multiple SSL/TLS sessions simultaneously and are configured with security certificates to establish trusted connections. They may also include features like load balancing, session caching, and traffic inspection to optimise overall performance and security of secure web traffic.
