It defines the rules and procedures for the transfer of email data across the internet, ensuring that messages are delivered reliably and efficiently.

How It Works

SMTP operates on a <a href="https://www.ituonline.com/it-glossary/?letter=C&pagenum=1#term-client-server-model" class="itu-glossary-inline-link">client-server model, where email clients or applications connect to an SMTP server to send outgoing messages. The protocol uses a series of text-based commands and responses to facilitate communication. When an email is sent, the client establishes a connection with the SMTP server, which then processes the message, verifies recipient addresses, and routes the email to the recipient’s mail server. SMTP typically works in conjunction with other protocols such as IMAP or POP3, which handle retrieving messages from the server to the recipient's email client.

The process involves several steps: the sender's email client connects to the SMTP server, authenticates if necessary, and issues commands like MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, and DATA to specify the sender, recipient, and message content. Once the message is accepted, the SMTP server queues and forwards it through the network until it reaches the recipient's email server, where it is stored for retrieval.
