Server virtualization is the process of dividing a single physical server into multiple virtual servers, each operating independently with its own operating system and applications. This technology enables more efficient use of hardware resources and simplifies management by consolidating workloads onto fewer physical machines.

How It Works

Server virtualization employs a software layer called a hypervisor or virtual machine monitor (VMM), which runs directly on the physical hardware or atop an operating system. The hypervisor creates and manages multiple virtual machines (VMs), each with its own virtualized hardware components such as CPU, memory, storage, and network interfaces. These VMs operate as if they were separate physical servers, allowing multiple operating systems to run concurrently on a single physical server. The hypervisor allocates resources dynamically, ensuring that each VM receives the necessary computing power while maintaining isolation from others.

By abstracting hardware resources, server virtualization allows for flexible deployment and management. Administrators can easily create, modify, or delete virtual servers without affecting the underlying physical hardware, enabling rapid provisioning and scaling of IT infrastructure.
