Remote sensing is the process of collecting information about an object, area, or phenomenon without making physical contact. This is typically achieved through sensors mounted on satellites, aircraft, or drones that capture data about Earth's surface or atmosphere from a distance.

How It Works

Remote sensing involves the use of various sensors that detect and measure electromagnetic radiation reflected or emitted by objects and surfaces. These sensors can operate across different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible, infrared, and microwave wavelengths. Data collected by these sensors are transmitted back to ground stations for processing and analysis. The technology can be active, where sensors emit their own signals (such as radar), or passive, relying on natural radiation (like sunlight) reflected from surfaces.

The collected data often require processing to correct distortions, calibrate measurements, and interpret the information accurately. Advanced techniques such as image analysis, spectral analysis, and machine learning are used to extract meaningful insights from the raw data.
