Packet switching is a method of transmitting data where messages are divided into smaller units called packets, each of which is sent independently through a network. This approach allows multiple packets from different messages to share the same communication paths, making networks more efficient and flexible.

How It Works

In packet switching, data is broken down into packets before transmission. Each packet contains not only a portion of the message but also control information such as source and destination addresses, sequence numbers, and error-checking data. When a packet is sent, it travels through the network independently, choosing its own route based on current network conditions. Routers and switches examine the control information to forward packets along the most efficient path. At the destination, packets are reassembled in the correct order to reconstruct the original message.

This process contrasts with circuit switching, where a dedicated communication path is established for the duration of the connection. Packet switching allows multiple users to share the same network resources dynamically, leading to more efficient use of bandwidth and increased scalability.
