Novell NetWare was a popular network operating system (NOS) used primarily in the 1990s to manage and share resources across computer networks. It provided the foundation for file, print, and application services in enterprise environments, enabling multiple computers to communicate and work together efficiently.

How It Works

Novell NetWare operates as a server-based operating system that manages network resources through a central server or servers. It uses a client-server architecture, where client devices connect to the NetWare server via network protocols, primarily IPX/SPX and later TCP/IP. The core of NetWare is its file system and directory service, which organise data and user permissions. NetWare's file system, called NetWare File System (NWFS), allows for efficient data storage and retrieval, while its directory service, Novell Directory Services (NDS), manages user accounts and network resources hierarchically. The system uses a network protocol called the Novell NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) to facilitate communication between clients and servers, ensuring smooth data transfer and resource sharing.
