Network routing is the process of determining the best paths through a network for data to travel from source to destination. It involves selecting the most efficient, reliable, and secure routes based on specific criteria and algorithms.

How It Works

Routing involves the use of routing protocols and algorithms that exchange information about network topology and conditions. Routers, which are specialized network devices, maintain routing tables that list available paths and their metrics, such as distance, cost, or latency. When a data packet arrives at a router, the routing process consults these tables to decide the optimal next hop toward the destination. Dynamic routing protocols automatically update routing tables in response to network changes, ensuring data can adapt to outages or congestion. Static routing, on the other hand, involves manually configuring routes, which remains fixed until manually changed.
