A network protocol analyzer, also known as a packet sniffer or network analyzer, is a software tool used to capture, decode, and analyze network traffic as it flows across a network in real-time. It provides detailed insights into the data packets, protocols, and communication processes occurring within the network, enabling administrators and security professionals to monitor network activity effectively.

How It Works

A network protocol analyzer intercepts data packets as they travel through a network interface. It captures raw data, which it then decodes into human-readable formats, revealing information such as source and destination addresses, protocol types, and payload content. The tool often includes filtering capabilities to focus on specific traffic types or IP addresses, and may provide real-time dashboards or detailed logs for analysis. Some analyzers also allow for the replay or export of captured data for further investigation.
