A Network Interface Card (NIC) is a hardware component installed in a computer or connected device that enables communication with a network. It acts as the interface between the device and the network infrastructure, facilitating data transfer to and from the network.

How It Works

The NIC typically consists of a circuit board with a connector, such as an Ethernet port or wireless antenna, and a controller chip that manages data transmission. When data is sent from the device, the NIC converts it into signals compatible with the network medium, whether wired or wireless. Conversely, incoming signals are received by the NIC, which then processes and forwards the data to the device's operating system for further handling.

NICs can be integrated directly onto the motherboard or added as separate expansion cards. They operate using various network protocols, with Ethernet being the most common for wired connections. Modern NICs often support advanced features like Wake-on-LAN, VLAN tagging, and offloading tasks to improve network performance.
