Namespace isolation is a technology used in virtualization and containerization that separates and isolates system resources such as process IDs, network interfaces, file systems, and device nodes between different processes or containers. This ensures that each process or container operates within its own independent environment, preventing interference or unintended interactions.

How It Works

Namespaces work by creating separate views of system resources for each process or container. When a namespace is created, it provides an isolated instance of a specific resource type, such as the network stack or process table. Processes within a namespace can only see and interact with resources within their own namespace, while remaining unaware of resources in other namespaces. This is achieved through kernel mechanisms that manage resource visibility and access controls, ensuring strict separation.

Multiple types of namespaces can be used simultaneously, such as process ID (PID) namespaces, network namespaces, mount namespaces, and user namespaces. These work together to create a comprehensive isolated environment, often combined with other container technologies, to simulate a complete, independent system instance within a shared host operating system.
