A mechanical keyboard is a type of keyboard that uses individual mechanical switches beneath each key to detect key presses. These keyboards are renowned for their durability, reliability, and the distinct tactile feedback they provide to users.

How It Works

Each key on a mechanical keyboard contains a dedicated mechanical switch that consists of several components: a housing, a spring, and a stem with a stem or contact point. When a key is pressed, the stem moves downward, compressing the spring and closing an electrical circuit within the switch. This action registers the keystroke. Unlike membrane keyboards, which use a rubber dome to complete the circuit, mechanical switches provide a more precise and consistent response. The design of the switch affects the feel and sound of the keystroke, with options ranging from linear (smooth and quiet) to tactile (with a bump) and clicky (with an audible click).
