Luminance keying is a video and image processing technique that makes parts of an image transparent based on their brightness levels. It is primarily used to isolate and remove backgrounds by selecting areas with specific luminance values, enabling the seamless compositing of different images or video layers.

How It Works

In luminance keying, the process involves analyzing the brightness (luminance) of each pixel within an image or video frame. The software identifies a range of luminance values that correspond to the background or specific areas to be made transparent. These pixels are then rendered transparent or semi-transparent, allowing other images or backgrounds to show through. Unlike chroma keying, which relies on colour, luminance keying focuses solely on brightness levels, making it effective in situations where colour uniformity is hard to achieve or when working with varying backgrounds.
