Line coding is a method used to convert digital data into signals that can be transmitted over a communication channel. It involves representing binary data as a specific pattern of electrical or optical signals on a transmission line, ensuring the data can be accurately sent and received.

How It Works

Line coding transforms binary data into a sequence of voltage or current levels that correspond to the digital bits. This process involves selecting a coding scheme that maps each bit or group of bits to a particular signal pattern, such as voltage pulses or optical signals. The chosen line coding scheme must balance factors like synchronization, bandwidth efficiency, and error detection. During transmission, the coding scheme ensures that the receiver can interpret the signals correctly by maintaining signal properties such as timing and amplitude. At the receiver end, the signals are decoded back into the original digital data, often with additional error detection or correction mechanisms integrated into the process.
