Lexical scoping is a programming concept that defines how variable names are resolved in nested functions or blocks. It determines which variable instance is accessed based on the physical structure of the code, especially the location where functions are written and defined.

How It Works

In lexical scoping, the scope of a variable is determined by its position within the source code. When a function is written, it retains access to variables in its defining environment, known as its lexical or static scope. This means that when a nested function references a variable, the interpreter or compiler looks for that variable in its own scope first, then in the scope of its enclosing functions, moving outward until it finds the variable or reaches the global scope. This static relationship remains consistent regardless of where the function is invoked at runtime.

Because of this, the lifetime of variables is tied to their scope, and closures—functions that retain access to variables from their defining environment—are a natural consequence of lexical scoping. This mechanism allows functions to be first-class citizens that carry their environment with them, enabling powerful programming patterns like callbacks and data encapsulation.
