JSON Web Encryption (JWE) is a standard that defines a way to encrypt JSON data, ensuring that sensitive information can be transmitted securely over networks. It provides a structured method to protect data confidentiality within the JSON format, making it suitable for secure communication between systems.

How It Works

JWE uses a combination of encryption algorithms to secure JSON payloads. Typically, the process involves encrypting the actual data (called the plaintext) with a content encryption key (CEK), which is itself encrypted with a key encryption algorithm. This layered approach, known as hybrid encryption, ensures both security and efficiency. The encrypted data, along with metadata such as the encryption algorithms used and the encrypted key, are packaged into a JWE token, which is a compact, URL-safe string.

The JWE structure is composed of multiple parts, including the protected headers, encrypted key, initialization vector, ciphertext, and authentication tag. These components are encoded and concatenated, allowing the recipient to decrypt and verify the data using the appropriate keys and algorithms.
