IPv6 leak refers to the unintended exposure of internet traffic over an IPv4 connection while a device is connected to an IPv6 network. This situation can create security vulnerabilities because it may allow data to bypass security measures like VPNs that are intended to encrypt or anonymise internet activity.

How It Works

When a device is configured to use IPv6 alongside IPv4, it is supposed to route all internet traffic through the IPv6 connection if available. However, due to misconfigurations or software limitations, some traffic might still be routed over the IPv4 connection instead of IPv6. This causes a leak where certain data bypasses the intended security controls, such as a VPN tunnel. IPv6 leaks can occur if the device's network settings do not properly enforce traffic routing policies or if the VPN client does not handle IPv6 traffic correctly.

Preventing IPv6 leaks involves configuring network settings to ensure all traffic is routed through secure channels, disabling IPv6 if not needed, or using leak protection features provided by VPN services. Proper testing and validation are essential to confirm that no traffic escapes the secured connection.
