High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI) is a technique used in imaging and photography to capture and reproduce a wider range of luminosity levels than standard digital imaging methods can typically handle. This results in images that better represent the full spectrum of light in a scene, from dark shadows to bright highlights.

How It Works

HDRI involves capturing multiple images of the same scene at different exposure levels — some underexposed to preserve highlights, and others overexposed to reveal shadow details. These images are then combined using specialized software that aligns and merges them into a single image with a greater dynamic range. The process often includes tone mapping, which adjusts the combined image to display it on standard screens without losing detail in the brightest or darkest areas.
