Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis is a sound synthesis technique that creates complex and dynamic sounds by varying the frequency of one waveform with another. It is widely used in digital audio processing and music production to generate a broad range of timbres and tonal qualities.

How It Works

FM synthesis involves two main components: the carrier oscillator and the modulator oscillator. The carrier produces the primary sound wave, while the modulator oscillator alters the frequency of the carrier at a specified modulation index and frequency ratio. By adjusting these parameters, the resulting waveform contains additional harmonic content, producing rich and complex sounds. The process can be further refined by changing the modulation depth, frequency ratios, and envelope settings, allowing for a vast palette of sonic textures.

This technique relies on mathematical algorithms that compute the combined waveforms in real-time, often using digital signal processing hardware or software.
