Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is a network technology that enables Fibre Channel data frames to be transmitted over standard Ethernet networks. It allows storage area networks (SANs) that traditionally used Fibre Channel to leverage existing Ethernet infrastructure, combining high-speed data transfer with simplified network management.

How It Works

FCoE encapsulates Fibre Channel frames within Ethernet frames, allowing storage traffic to traverse Ethernet networks without losing the Fibre Channel protocol's features. This encapsulation is performed by specialized hardware called Fibre Channel over Ethernet Converged Network Adapters (FCoE CNAs), which handle both Ethernet and Fibre Channel traffic seamlessly. The technology uses data center bridging (DCB) standards to ensure lossless Ethernet transmission, maintaining the integrity and performance required for storage traffic. FCoE typically operates over dedicated VLANs or priority queues to separate storage traffic from regular network data, ensuring minimal latency and high reliability.
