Ethernet Over HDMI (EoH) is a feature that allows HDMI cables to transmit Ethernet data alongside video and audio signals. This integration enables compatible devices to share a network connection through the same cable used for high-definition media transfer, simplifying connectivity and reducing cable clutter.

How It Works

Ethernet Over HDMI utilises the HDMI cable's existing infrastructure to carry Ethernet signals, typically at speeds up to 100 Mbps. Both the source device (such as a Blu-ray player or gaming console) and the display device (like a TV or monitor) must support EoH. When connected, the HDMI ports communicate using the HDMI Ethernet Channel (HEC), which is a dedicated data channel within the HDMI specification. This channel enables the devices to establish a network connection, allowing data to be transmitted seamlessly between them and other network-connected devices.

Once the connection is established, devices can access the internet directly or share network resources without needing separate Ethernet cables. The process involves the devices negotiating network parameters and establishing a secure, stable connection through the HDMI link, effectively turning the HDMI cable into a network conduit in addition to its traditional role of transmitting high-definition media.
