Digitization is the process of converting information into a digital format, where data is represented as a series of bits—binary digits of 0s and 1s—that can be processed, stored, and transmitted by digital systems. This transformation enables traditional information to be handled electronically, facilitating easier sharing, analysis, and preservation.

How It Works

During digitization, analogue information such as text, images, audio, or video is transformed into digital data through a process called sampling and encoding. For example, an analogue audio signal is sampled at regular intervals to measure its amplitude, then each sample is converted into a binary number that can be stored electronically. Similarly, images are converted by capturing pixel data, each represented as a set of binary values corresponding to colour and intensity. The resulting digital data is organized into bits, which are grouped into bytes and larger data structures, making it compatible with digital devices and software.

This process often involves the use of scanners, digital cameras, or specialized software that performs the conversion. Once digitized, information can be stored on various media such as hard drives, cloud storage, or servers, and can be manipulated using digital tools for editing, analysis, or transmission.
