Database normalization is the process of organising data within a relational database to minimise redundancy and ensure data integrity. It involves applying a series of rules, known as normal forms, to structure data efficiently and logically.

How It Works

Normalization typically begins with the identification of data entities and their relationships. The process involves decomposing larger tables into smaller, more focused tables, each representing a single concept or entity. This decomposition is guided by a set of normal forms—rules that specify how data should be stored to eliminate redundancy and dependency issues. The most common normal forms include First Normal Form (1NF), Second Normal Form (2NF), and Third Normal Form (3NF). Each successive form imposes stricter rules to improve data organisation, such as ensuring that each table contains only atomic (indivisible) data and that dependencies are properly managed.

Normalization also involves establishing primary keys to uniquely identify records and foreign keys to maintain relationships between tables. This structure allows for efficient data retrieval, easier maintenance, and consistency across the database.
