A bounce message is an email notification sent back to the sender indicating that their email could not be delivered to the intended recipient. It provides details about why the delivery failed, helping the sender understand and resolve the issue.

How It Works

When an email server attempts to deliver a message and encounters an issue—such as an invalid email address, a full recipient mailbox, or server problems—it generates a bounce message. This message is automatically sent back to the sender's email address. Bounce messages typically contain a status code and a description of the failure reason, which can range from temporary issues like server overloads to permanent problems like non-existent addresses. They serve as network administrative messages, alerting the sender to problems with email delivery.

There are two main types of bounce messages: hard bounces and soft bounces. Hard bounces indicate permanent failures, such as invalid email addresses, and generally require the sender to remove or update the address. Soft bounces suggest temporary issues, like a full mailbox or server downtime, which may resolve over time. Analyzing bounce messages helps email administrators and marketers manage their mailing lists effectively and improve deliverability.
