A BIOS password is a security feature implemented within a computer's motherboard BIOS setup that requires a user to enter a specific password before gaining access to the BIOS configuration settings. This measure helps protect the system from unauthorized modifications at the firmware level, which could affect hardware operation or security.

How It Works

The BIOS password is stored within the firmware of the motherboard. When the computer is powered on, the BIOS prompts the user to enter the password before allowing access to the BIOS setup utility. There are typically two types of BIOS passwords: a user password that must be entered during startup, and an administrator (or supervisor) password that restricts access to BIOS settings entirely. Once set, the password must be entered each time the system boots or when attempting to access the BIOS configuration, depending on the security settings chosen.
